Compute and Storage Assessment
Provided project management oversight (PMO) and guidance to 10 Service Areas within CIT to develop a 3-5 Year Strategic Plan (Move to the Cloud) for their application inventory. In order to accomplish this
goal, the SII team:
- Established the first comprehensive application, database, server, hypervisor, and existing Cloud inventory (CMDB) for CIT by collecting information from over 10 discovery tools in use at NIH
- Facilitated the evaluation and categorization of the NIH CIT applications:
- Those already in the Cloud
- Those that could move to the Cloud
- Replace with Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) or Government Off The Shelf (GOTS) packaged software
- Applications that can be Sunset
- Applications that must remain non-Cloud for some identified reason
- Etc.
- In addition, we introduced the differentiating concept of what could move to the cloud vs. what should move to the cloud
- Facilitated the categorization of the individual applications into application systems and consistency groups
- We then assisted with the mapping of the applications and databases to their specific servers. This was done by providing CIT with an Access Database that was developed and data populated from our project work.
- As the last step, we facilitated the determination of a disposition for each application or application group
- Facilitated the team’s presentation to Senior Management of the 3-5 year Strategic Plan.
This process then led to the successful completion of our project: The development of an IT strategic roadmap for the CIT Organization to implement the selected application dispositions in a specific timeframe over the next 5 years.
