Here's an overview of our methodology for Data Center Consolidation projects:

• Define current state of installed infrastructure and applications
• Define target state for each server/application, with appropriate changes to infrastructure as needed
• Identify applications that work together and need to be consolidated at the same time (Consistency Groups)
• Develop a consolidation schedule including time to acquire the skills and tools necessary
• Build the target environment
• Consolidate the soft assets (applications and data), keeping data in sync while testing prior to going live
• Test - Target infrastructure, consolidated applications, disaster recovery
• Go Live
• Decommission "current state" hardware assets
